The Whitaker Band

The Whitaker Band
01/09/06

Over the years mine and Mick Whitakers paths have crossed many times. Around 1997-1999 I was gigging in a line-up with him that I thought was really good. The pic to the right shows Mick, Ken and me at the Bierex in Newcastle, one of our regular gigs. For me this was probably the the most enjoyable live performance period of my music career.

Mick Whitaker (Panama Red) Vocals/Percussion
Andy Hawking (Bobby Decent) Keyboards/Vocals
Steve Thompson (Davewudsurvivor) Guitar/Vocals
Ken Goodinson (Harry The Bastard) Drums
Richard Rutherford (Jack Death) Bass

Below is a gig list I found on my PC - I would say this was 1999. Sadly my involvemnt in this band came to an end when I moved to Teesside. I recall that Ousburn Delta gig outdoors on a sunny Sunday afternoon. I intended recording it but didn't. I wish I had as it was incredible. It was meant to be me, Mick and Andy performing "unplugged" but Richard and our new drummer Graham (playing brushes) came along too. We were no boy band but as Mick, Andy, and Me, sang an accapella harmony there was a clearly audible sigh from the audience.

11 July Turks Head South Shields
24 July Archer Newcastle
25 July Bierex Newcastle (early afternoon)
25 July The Tyne - Ouseburn Delta Folk & Blues Festival (late afternoon)
31 July Butlers - Nunn St Newcastle
04 Aug Hyena Cafe - Leazes Lane Newcastle
05 Sept Turks Head South Shields
02 Oct Archer - Newcastle

Hi steve, Am the the guy who spoke to you at middlesbrough music fest, a few years back! Love your site, and enjoyed listening to the gig at the cellar club with mick whitaker. Caught up with mick at the Rose and Crown pub in south shields about 3 weeks back, he was with charlie harcourt, and mike waller, he was saying he really missed the bass and drums, which he is used to, but i must say it was an excellent gig, with studio quality balance and sound, as i mentioned before to you i was sound engineer with halfbreed in the seventies, so its great catching up again with mick anytime, would hope one day to see you, playing up here again, hope things going well for you. cheers Roger.

Got to know Mick and his music when the band were resident at Battle Hill Social Club in the mid eighties and I worked there, the set then included songs from BB King,s Midnight Believer, also Little Feat, A Flock of Seagulls and others.Bands that were booked as the "main show" used to ask how were they supposed to "follow that" after the bands first slot.Mick actually copied onto cassette some of his earlier albums for me but sadly they have worn out over the years.I last saw Mick around 10 years ago in a club I was running when he turned up as a guest at a party that was booked at the club. I would love to hear him again so if he is still performing if someone could list some dates it would be appreciated
